NDIS & Learning Support

Support shaped around each individual child

Children come to me for many different reasons: a particular skill may need strengthening, school may have become overwhelming, or a child may simply need a calmer and more practical way into learning. My role is to understand what is needed, what may be getting in the way, and shape the support around the child rather than expecting them to fit a standard program of worksheets or checklists.

Goals may be focused and short-term or broaden as confidence and skills develop. Sessions can take place in my learning space in Templestowe, in your family home where practical, or online if needed. I keep in close contact with parents and caregivers so that our work remains useful and relevant. I can also collaborate with schools and other professionals when this is helpful and appropriate.

NDIS-funded learning support

I regularly work with NDIS participants, connecting learning-focused support with the goals and everyday needs that matter in each child’s life. This can look quite different from one student to the next. Sessions may focus on foundational literacy or numeracy, communication, routines and organisation, confidence, greater independence, and can involve practical approaches tailored to a neurodivergent learner’s particular strengths and needs.

For younger children, I have particular experience providing support under 15_005_0118_1_3 – ECI Professional: Other Early Childhood Professional – Direct Service, within Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living Skills. Families may also see Core Supports in their plans. These generally relate to broader day-to-day assistance, while Capacity Building funding is intended to help participants develop skills and independence.

Making NDIS arrangements straightforward

If you are unsure which part of your child’s plan may be relevant, you are very welcome to get in touch and we can work through it together. From there, we can look at the participant’s plan, goals and the support being considered to see which funding category may be relevant to our work together.

I work with both self-managed and plan-managed participants. Families can receive clear NDIS invoices directly, or I can liaise with their plan manager, so the practical side is straightforward from the beginning.

Areas of learning support

Michelle supports a primary-aged student working through a maths problem with graph paper, base-ten blocks and fraction pieces.

Mathematics

Foundations to Year 10

I offer support from early number recognition and foundational skills right through to problem-solving, algebra and beyond. I have also occasionally supported students undertaking Year 10 maths and VCE Foundation Mathematics as part of broader homework and study support. Across topics such as times tables, fractions, clocks and algebra, I use clear explanations, visual models, hands-on materials and carefully chosen games from my personal library to develop a deeper understanding of how and why something works. This is far more useful (and much more likely to stick) than memorising steps in a process that still feels mysterious. Finding a new, different explanation when classroom approaches have not yet connected is one of my specialties… it is always so wonderful and satisfying to see a key idea click into place for the first time!

English & Literacy

Reading, writing and comprehension

Literacy opens the door to everyday independence and wider academic learning. From preschool through primary and secondary school to Year 12, I support students with everything from letter recognition, handwriting and early reading foundations through to fluency, spelling, writing, comprehension and essay skills. Sessions are always shaped around each student’s current level, learning needs and personal interests, helping them understand texts, organise ideas and express their thinking with growing clarity and assurance. I draw on my extensive collection of children books, a wide array of teaching materials and carefully selected digital resources to create individualised sessions that feel varied, purposeful and genuinely enjoyable. One of my favourite signs that a literacy session has really engaged a student is when they are surprised (and sometimes a little disappointed!) to discover that our time is already up.

Confidence, Organisation & Study Skills

Learning habits and independence

It is remarkable what can be achieved with targeted, practical support for routines, planning, homework, assessment preparation and the development of independent learning habits. By breaking larger demands into manageable steps, students can feel less overwhelmed, find a clearer starting point and gradually take greater ownership of (and pride in) their work and their identity as a learner. In today’s learning environment, these skills increasingly include using digital and AI tools thoughtfully: knowing when technology can help, how to question and evaluate what it produces, and when to pause and think independently before reaching for an external answer. The aim is not to avoid useful tools, but to understand them and ensure that they support rather than replace the distinctly human capacities of attention, judgement, creativity and problem-solving.

PERSONALISED LEARNING SUPPORT IN TEMPLESTOWE

Let’s find the right starting point.

You don’t need to know exactly what kind of support your child needs before getting in touch. Tell me a little about what is happening now and what you hope they might gain, and I’ll let you know whether I think I can help and what a useful starting point could look like for your family.
